5 Tips to Make Your Next a Smooth One

Spring will be here before we know it and with the spring comes a hot buying and selling market for homes. Many families choose to begin their home search in the spring so that they can move in the summer, in hopes of not disrupting their children’s school year. If you are one of the many families looking to relocate in the spring and summer months, check out these few tips to help make your move a smooth one.

Pack Boxes by Room
When moving into a new home, there is nothing more chaotic than trying to get your new home set up with the essentials in the first couple of days. Labeling your boxes by room that they were packed in will help tremendously with this, whether you’re trying to unpack the kitchen, bathroom, or even bedrooms.

Label Boxes with Contents
Digging through boxes looking for one particular item can be extremely frustrating. When loading up your boxes, take a marker and write the contents of the box on the side. When you are settling into your new home, being able to check the labels on the boxes while you are searching for one particular item will save you time.

Use Existing Linens and Blankets to Pack Breakables
While you can easily purchase moving blankets and bubble wrap to keep your breakables protected, you might consider using items that you’re already planning on packing to do the job, just as efficiently. Use dish towels and potholders to protect your plates and bowls, bath towels to protect breakable home decor items, and blankets to protect large electronic devices such as televisions.

Prioritize Items in the Order of Necessity
If you’re planning on moving over a few days, pack and send items to your new home that are non-essential, that can be stored to unpack after you have the necessities settled in. For example, holiday decorations, home decor items and clothing that isn’t worn frequently. Each person in the family should pack clothing and essential items to hold them over for at least one week separately, so that they have clothing and essentials set aside while they try to re-organize their items when they settle into their new spaces.

Label Cords and Remote Controls, and Pack Them Together
Gather all remote controls, cords to televisions, streaming devices and other electronics and plan to pack them all into one box. Take masking or painter’s tape and label each remote, HDMI cord, and power cord with which device and which room they belong to. When you go to settle into your new home, having everything in once place and labeled will help keep you more organized and your sanity in check.
