If you ask any homeowner what they would have done different in their home, they would likely say they would have added more storage space.
Life happens, your family grows and you accumulate items over the years. Some items you wish to keep on display, others you may wish to store, whether a family heirloom, holiday decoration or even just keepsake items!
If you’re trying to brainstorm more storage in your next home, here are a few tips to give you the extra space without necessarily adding to your square footage.
Add Storage Under Your Staircase
Out of sight, out of mind! The space under your staircase is perfect for additional storage and is often left to go to waste in home construction. Opting to enclose the space with shelving, walls and a door will give you extra space without adding to the square footage of your home.
Add a Storage Room in Your Basement
When drawing up the plans for your basement, you might add a family room, a bathroom or even an extra bedroom. But, what if you also add a storage room, complete with built-in shelving, to store your holiday decorations, luggage and more?
Make Use of Extra Closets in All Bedrooms
Have a guest bedroom that you’re planning on adding into the mix? Add a closet that can be used for your family’s storage needs (unless you plan on having long-term guests).
Opt for a Portion of the Garage for Storage Space
If you’re planning on adding a garage into your floor plan, make good use of the space and add shelving or even just space to store storage totes that will be out of the way of parking cars and other outdoor equipment that you might be storing in there.
