Preparing Your Home’s Exterior for Autumn

Although we’ve experienced an extreme heat wave here in Southern Maryland for the beginning part of September, autumn is inching it’s way in and our weather will be cooling down before we know it! While most families will be busy with school starting, extra curricular activities beginning and preparing for the upcoming holiday season, it is extremely important to make sure your home is ready for the changing of the seasons, starting with the exterior. Check out these few helpful tips to get your home ready!

Inspect and Clean Exterior Gutters
Leaves will be falling very soon and like many autumns in the past, so will the rain drops! Be sure to check your gutters for any damage and to ensure they are functioning correctly. Additionally, although there will be more leaves falling, take this time to clean out your gutters from last year’s leaves and summer debris!

Switch the Direction of Your Ceiling Fans
When the weather begins to cool down, change the direction of your ceiling fans to a clockwise rotation to circulate warm air through your home.

Inspect Roof and Chimney, Stock Up on Propane or Heating Oil
Check your shingles on your roof to ensure your roof is in tip-top shape for the upcoming winter; most roofing companies will not facilitate a roof replacement during the winter months, only in the warmer months, so you’ll want to schedule a roof repair or replacement sooner rather than later if you need one. Additionally, if you’re planning on using your chimney or fireplace in the winter months, you’ll want to make sure it is clear from debris and is in functional order. If your fireplace runs on propane or you have oil heat, be sure that you have those supplies on-hand before the cooler weather hits.

Inspect Window Seals and Door Seals
Ensure all windows and doors are closed and sealed properly to help keep cool air (and pests) from entering during the cooler months.
