Our heat wave has finally come to an end in Southern Maryland and many are enjoying our mild, sunny weather! As we close in on the end of September, cooler weather will continue to settle into our area to make way for the autumn season. Now that we’ve covered how to prepare the exterior of your home for the fall, let’s cover the interior!
Purchase Thermal Curtains or Shades for Windows
As colder temperatures set in, many windows, particularly in older homes, tend to have air seeping in around their windows. Purchasing thermal curtains or shades will help to keep the cool air out and the warm air in.
Switch Your Ceiling Fan to Rotate Clockwise
In the summer, your ceiling fan should rotate counterclockwise to circulate cooler air throughout the room with a downward draft. In the winter, your fan should be switched to rotate clockwise to circulate warmer air from the ceiling throughout the room.
Change the Batteries in Smoke Detectors
As with any season or change in the clocks, it’s important to test and replace the batteries in your smoke and CO2 detectors to ensure your family is safe in the event of an emergency.
Clean Out Your Fireplace
If you have a wood-burning fireplace, be sure to clean out residue from last year to start the fall season fresh!
Change Your HVAC Filters
Although changing your filters should be done on a regular basis, it is important to be sure to start the fall season off fresh with changing your HVAC filters to improve efficiency in your home.
Clean Dryer Ducts
With cooler weather, you might find yourself tackling in-home projects like washing your curtains, guest room bedding, furniture covers, etc. since there won’t be much to do outside. Since you’ll likely be using your washer and dryer more frequently, now would be a good time to ensure your dryer ducts are clear from old lint!
