As much of the Mid-Atlantic has experienced over the last few weeks, the Southern Maryland area has been under a heatwave, with no real end in sight! While conditions are ideal to stay inside in the air conditioning, having your air conditioning running consistently to combat the high temperatures might be taking a toll on your electric bill! To help keep some dollars in your wallet during this heat, here are a few tips to consider.
Keep Thermostat on a Higher Setting
While you may be used to keeping your thermostat on 70 degrees or lower in the summer, setting your internal temperature on a higher degree (if you can stand it) will be a little easier on your electric bill, especially if you are out of the house during the day at work.
Keep Sun-Facing Windows Covered
Keeping your curtains or blinds closed during the high heat may help to keep not only the sun out, but even a drafty window from allowing too much cool air to escape! Take notice of windows that the sun beams into, especially for long periods of time and keep those blinds shut during those peak hours of the day.
Run Ceiling Fans When Possible
A great way to keep the cooler air circulating throughout your home, even when your thermostat is set on a higher than normal setting, is to keep your ceiling fans running throughout the day. Be sure your fan is circulating in a counter-clockwise direction, optimal for the summertime.
Change Air Filters
Be sure to check your air filters regularly in your home and keep them as clean as possible. A dirty air filter will mean that your unit is having to work harder to circulate the air.
